Treatment for the 21st Century
Professional treatments for periodontal disease always
involve the same overall objectives: |
- Stop the infection
- Reduce or eliminate the bacteria
- Reduce the pockets around the teeth
- Maintain the results over time
|
| Depending on the severity of disease, the depths of
the pockets and the degree of bone Loss around the teeth,
various surgical treatment options have been available
for many years. White these conventional surgical options
have been effective for many people, as with any surgical
procedure, there are drawbacks. And, despite our best
efforts, conventional surgical treatments have never been
able to totally eliminate the bacteria that cause the
infection. Recurrence of disease has been a problem. |
LASER PERIODONTAL THERAPY
LASER ASSISTED NEW ATTACHMENT PROCEDURE
|
| Since 2004 this office has used a laser surgical procedure
which has been approved by the FDA for treating gum disease.
In fact, this is the only dental device which has received
multiple levels of FDA clearance in the treatment of periodontal
disease. And the procedure for its use has been developed
through years of study, and is patented. This Nd:YAG laser
has been used for over 20 years in medicine for various
purposes. Applied to periodontal treatment, the laser
has proven extremely effective: |
- Stops the infection
- Eliminates the bacteria completely
- Pocket reduction as good as conventional treatments
- Better maintenance of results over time
|
| And, because the laser is very selective
in its effects: |
- No incisions
- No stitches
- No post-op bleeding
- No swelling
- Minimal or No pain
- No gum recession
- No tooth sensitivity
- No cosmetic changes
- No lost time from work or other activities
|
|
Laser periodontal treatment has proven to be extremely effective
for most patients without any of the drawbacks of conventional
surgical treatment.
The Laser Procedure
|
 |
|
A.
|
A deep periodontal pocket, with loss of bone,
and tartar on the root surface is determined to
be present. |
| B. |
The laser selectively removes the infected gum
tissue that lines the pocket wall, removing unhealthy
tissue that lines the pocket for improved access
to the pocket and the root surface. |
| C. |
Tartar and other debris is removed from the root
surface, and rinsed out of the pocket. |
| D. |
The laser is used again to kill any bacteria or
toxins that remain on the root surface or in the
gum tissue, completely disinfecting the area. |
| E. |
The gum tissue is readapted back to the root surface
and is seated to the root surface with a dense fibrin
clot.
We have a very small, sterile wound area that is
now sealed shut. |
| F |
The bite is adjusted to eliminate any trauma to
the tooth, and to balance out the chewing forces
throughout the region. |
| G. |
Complete heating results in pocket depth reduction
through reattachment of the gum tissue and connective
tissue back to the root surface. |

WHY IS LASER PERIODONTAL THERAPY BETTER?
|
- LPT is about as easy as erasing a blackboard-there's
no cutting and no suturing
- There is much less discomfort with LPT than with
conventional periodontal surgery-both during and after
the procedure
|
| It takes less time than the conventional periodontal
treatment. Fewer appointments and less time overall. |
- None of the post-surgical complications and drawbacks
associated with conventional scalpel surgery
- Excellent, long-tasting results
- Rapid recovery, no disruption to your normal schedule
- Safe for patients with health concerns such as diabetes,
bleeding disorders, or those medications such as blood
thinners, cyclosporine or chemotherapy agents.

PERIODONTAL (GUM) DISEASE
LASER PERIDONTAL (GUM) THERAPY
If the disease has progressed to more advanced stages where
bone loss and diseased pockets have formed (Periodontitis)
Dr. Petrosky
will discuss your treatment options including:
Scaling and Root Planing
Osseous (bone) Surgery
Laser Periodontal (gum) Therapy or LANAP
Of the three choices you have to treat your disease Dr. Petrosky
most often recommends Laser Periodontal Therapy utilizing
the Periolase dental laser. This revelutionary laser treatment
is the ONLY FDA cleared protocol for regaining
new gum attachment and bone around your teeth.
Do all dentists have the Periolase Laser?
No. Dr. Petrosky
is one of the first dentists in the State of New Jersey to
utilize this procedure and one of only several hundred in
the entire nation willing to invest in this wonderful technology.
Having used lasers for over 4 years, you can he confident
in Dr. Petrosky's experience to treat your disease. Dr. Petrosky
has completed advanced training in the use of Lasers and is
licensed to perform the LANAP Laser Periodontal Therapy
and receive Laser certification from the Institute for
Advanced Laser Dentistry with instructor Raymond A. Yukna.
DMD, MS, Professor and Director of Advanced Periodontal Therapies,
University of Colorado School of Dentistry.
What exactly is Laser Periodontal (gum) Therapy?
This Periodontal Surgery is called LANAP or Laser
Assisted New Attachment Procedure,
and replaces the traditional gum scraping of scaling/root
planning and the old bone surgery with its scalpels, sutures,
and pain.
The Periolase Laser removes only the diseased tissue and
leaves healthy tissue alone. The technique involves two passes
with the laser, with ultrasonic cleaning of the pockets completed
between the laser passes. Dr. Petrosky
will also adjust your bite at each appointment, a vital step
in assuring proper healing.
How much pain will I have?
There will be NO pain during the surgery. You will be completely
numb and we can alsouse oral sedation to help you relax if
you so choose. Post treatment pain is so different than traditional
surgery because the laser promotes the bodys healing
process. You can expect some mild discomfort which is easily
handled with analgesics. Patients Who have had the LANAP laser
gum surgery experience very little discomfort following the
procedure and most often only have to take Ibuprofen (Advil.
Motrin) to feel comfortable.
How many appointments does it take?
We always complete the treatment in two appointments which
are scheduled one week apart. This is the best way to get
rid of the bacteria that cause the disease and keep it from
spreading into other teeth.
What exactly happens to my diseased pockets?
You can expect to have NEW gum attachment and bone formation
in most of your pockets. This Laser LANAP Therapv is the onty
FDA cleared laser procedure that will actually give this result.
Most Dentists treating gum disease with only "soft tissue
management", and Scaling/Root Planing will only see REPAIRED
attachment, which is far inferior to new gum and bone formation
of the Laser procedure.
Is the Laser Periodontal Therapy a Cure for my Disease?
No. There is no cure for moderate/advanced periodontitis.
The good news is that we can now treat it very effectively
with the Periolase Laser LANAP therapy. Just like so many
other diseases such as Diabetes, even though there is no cure,
it can be successfully treated to allow you to live with the
disease under control.
I have seen other dentist adds for laser gum treatments,
are they the same thing?
If the dentist is not using the Periolase laser and following
the LANAP protocol the answer is NO! The FDA has only cleared
the Periolase Laser and the LANAP to be utilized for this
protocol. Only dentists who have been trained and licensed
for the Periolase LANAP therapy can claim to treat your gums
with new attachment and bone formation.
There are other lasers (diode, and erbium lasers) which can
be used to treat minor gum problems but these laser procedures
have NO FDA cleared research to show new attachment
or new bone formation after treatment!
If you are interested in the FDA research performed by Dr.
Ray Yukna ask Dr. Petrosky
and he will get you a copy of the scientific study and FDA
clearance.

First Laser Gum Disease Procedure to
gain FDA Clearance -
"Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure or Laser-ANAP®"
CERRITOS, Calif., October 8, 2004 /
PRNewswire / - Millennium Dental
Technologies, Inc. (MDT) announced today it has received
the first FDA clearance ever for a laser-based periodontal
(gum) disease treatment protocol while using the first
ever digital dental laser--the PerioLase® MVP-7.
50 people out of 100 have moderate
to severe gum disease, 40 out of the 50 don't know it,
and only 3 people out of 100 will ever get treated before
it's too late.
Gum disease is a silent, painless,
chronic, communicable, bacterial infection that often
goes undetected or ignored until severe gum and bone
destruction catch the individual's attention. Traditional
treatments for gum disease have, until Laser-ANAP, been
perceived as painful with a long and uncomfortable recovery,
scaring patients away and causing the epidemic numbers
suffering with this preventable and now attractively
treatable disease.
The US Food and Drug Administration
cleared Laser-ANAP® ("Laser Assisted New
Attachment Procedure") with a unique and specific
claim for, "cementum-mediated new periodontal
ligament attachment to the root surface in the absence
of long junctional epithelium."
FDA clearance for Laser-ANAP®
using the PerioLase® MVP-7 variable
pulsed Nd:YAG dental laser follows three years of research
at Louisiana State University, School of Dentistry,
New Orleans, by principal investigator, Professor Raymond
A. Yukna, DMD, MS, and coordinator of post-graduate
periodontics at LSU. Professor Yukna led a controlled,
blinded, clinical and human histology study that evidenced
new root surface coating (cementum) and new connective
tissue (periodontal ligament) formation (collagen) on
on tooth roots by stimulating existing
stem cells to grow following the use of the PerioLase®
MVP-7 & Laser-ANAP® protocol.
"These results are very positive,
very consistent, and very encouraging related to the
treatment of deep gum pockets," said Yukna. "Dentists
have been looking for ways to regenerate some of the
tissues lost to gum infections and Laser-ANAP®
is an exciting and revolutionary treatment protocol
showing microscopically that we can form a new root
coating (cementum) and new connective tissue attachment
(collagen). Our consistent results (all LANAP treated
teeth showed a positive result) suggest that the best
possible type of healing can be obtained using the specific
Laser-ANAP® protocol. This presents a wonderful
alternative to traditional surgery."
The preliminary phase of Yukna's study
was published in the International
Association of Dental Research, January, 2004. On
March 12, 2004, Dr. Yukna and co-workers presented their
complete findings at the International Association of
Dental Research Meeting in Hawaii in a paper titled,
"Human Periodontal Regeneration Following the Laser
Assisted New Attachment Procedure." http://iadr.confex.com/iadr/2003Goteborg/techprogram/abstract_34208.htm
